The father of the modern conservative movement is dead today at 82. I'm too young to reflect on his heyday, but I have to say that I admired his intellect, despite his conservatism. He also gets extra credit for being one of the only conservative intellectuals not to display cognitive dissonance on the Iraq war.
He'll be missed.

Buckley was clever and was at his best when conservatives were a small and frowned upon minority. I love the following quote of his from long ago.
"Id rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University."
